Review of “Public History in Japan. Theory and Practice”, edited by Masafumi Yokemoto, Miho Hayashi, Michihiro Okamoto, Andrew Gordon; Springer Singapore, 2025

The volume reviewed here forms part of this broader reflection on the field’s development in Japan and beyond. It examines how public history seeks legitimacy in the Japanese context: on what grounds, through which topics, practices, and methods, and against the background of a traditional academic historiography that has long regarded participatory, media-based, and civic approaches to the study of the past with caution.

The Italian Association of Public History (AIPH) turns ten in 2026

The English word “public history” (PH) is used, discussed, contested, denigrated, or, as we thought, finally considered a useful concept for explaining and framing long-standing practices in the humanities and history in Italy. Those who practised what has been called “the discipline without a name” recognised themselves in a theoretical-practical framework that attributed scientific status to many cultural projects conceived together with the public and for the territorial communities, and which concerned the critical and participatory actualisation of the study of the past and memory, and reflections on its public presence as a civic right to history in democratic societies.

La Comunità nelle pratiche e nei progetti di Public History

This essay explores the concept of “communities” as objects of study and as actors in Italian and international Public History practices. Before describing three cases of community-sourcing in communities located in Italy, the United States and Belgium, we discuss how the “community” has been studied in the recent history of Italian Public History and its “glocal” dimension based on the Book of Abstracts of the Italian Association of Public History annual conferences from 2017 to 2025.

Public History and its sub-field of public History of education are applied disciplines in and for the present. However, good practices and ethical methods are sometimes summarized when producing disciplinary manifestos. This essay will engage with different history manifestos and their importance in describing the hermeneutic of Public and Applied History in the 21st century and how these manifestos are connected to the Public History of Education

Obituary Peter Hertner, Professor of Economic and Social History at the Martin-Luther-Universität in Halle-Wittenberg (1942-2023)

Peter Hertner was born in 1942, in Ulm in Southern Germany. He studied in Heidelberg, Besançon, Basel, Strasbourg, Paris, and Marburg where he was awarded his diploma in economics in 1968, and he also obtained his PhD in 1971, with a dissertation on the economic and social history of Strasbourg, 1650-1715. He was an assistant professor at the Department of Social and Economic History in Marburg, from 1970 until 1977.

La rivista “Ricerche Storiche” e gli albori della public history in Italia

Da una decina d’anni ormai, «Ricerche Storiche» (d’ora in avanti RS) è diventata in Italia una delle riviste di storia più attenta agli sviluppi della Public History (d’ora in avanti PH). Quando questo interesse è nato e in quali circostanze? E, soprattutto, come rintracciare eventualmente forme ancora inconsapevoli di PH nei cinquant’anni di storia della rivista? La domanda non è banale e prima di cercare di rispondere in questo intervento, non ero affatto sicuro di trovare dei semi intellettuali e metodologici che avrebbero potuto fare pensare ad una filiazione naturale tra ieri ed oggi.
