The volume reviewed here forms part of this broader reflection on the field’s development in Japan and beyond. It examines how public history seeks legitimacy in the Japanese context: on what grounds, through which topics, practices, and methods, and against the background of a traditional academic historiography that has long regarded participatory, media-based, and civic approaches to the study of the past with caution.

The Italian Association of Public History (AIPH) turns ten in 2026

The English word “public history” (PH) is used, discussed, contested, denigrated, or, as we thought, finally considered a useful concept for explaining and framing long-standing practices in the humanities and history in Italy. Those who practised what has been called “the discipline without a name” recognised themselves in a theoretical-practical framework that attributed scientific status to many cultural projects conceived together with the public and for the territorial communities, and which concerned the critical and participatory actualisation of the study of the past and memory, and reflections on its public presence as a civic right to history in democratic societies.

La Comunità nelle pratiche e nei progetti di Public History

This essay explores the concept of “communities” as objects of study and as actors in Italian and international Public History practices. Before describing three cases of community-sourcing in communities located in Italy, the United States and Belgium, we discuss how the “community” has been studied in the recent history of Italian Public History and its “glocal” dimension based on the Book of Abstracts of the Italian Association of Public History annual conferences from 2017 to 2025.

Key Terms of Public History, a review

Key Terms of Public History is the second volume in the series Public History in European Perspectives, edited by Thomas Cauvin, Karin Priem, and Sandra Camarda at the Luxembourg Centre for Digital and Public History (C2DH), with the publisher De Gruyter Oldenbourg. This book is an English translation of a 2021 Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht book, “Schlüsselbegriffe der Public History.” The aim of the authors was to engage a German-speaking perspective on the discipline with international Public History practitioners.

Public History (of Education) and Applied History Manifestos’ 2011-2023

Public History and its sub-field of public History of education are applied disciplines in and for the present. However, good practices and ethical methods are sometimes summarized when producing disciplinary manifestos. This essay will engage with different history manifestos and their importance in describing the hermeneutic of Public and Applied History in the 21st century and how these manifestos are connected to the Public History of Education

L’Histoire Publique comme histoire du temps présent

La conception du temps historique a été profondément débattue et repensée depuis la fin du XXe siècle surtout en raison de la chute du communisme soviétique et de ce que Francis Fukuyama écrivit sur la fin de l’histoire avec le triomphe des démocraties libérales et du capitalisme et l’avènement d’un présent perpétuel d’un ordre économique libéral. Dans le cadre de notre intervention nous ne prétendons pas résumer ce débat pluridisciplinaire sur le présentisme ravivé en France par François Hartog il y a une vingtaine d’années mais seulement commenter en quoi la Public History se positionne par rapport aux différentes temporalités du passé et aux mémoires collectives.
